Dermal Fillers

Filler Implants

Injectable cosmetic fillers are injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. Most of these wrinkle fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body. Some people may need more than one injection to achieve the wrinkle-smoothing effect. The effect lasts for about six months or longer. Successful results depend on health of the skin, skill of the doctor, type of filler used

Hyaluronic acid is a common ingredient in injectable filler. Hyaluronic acid fillers have become popular soft tissue filler augmentation agents over the past several years. They have helped revolutionize the filler market with a number of new products available for use for patients.

Restylane is a sterile gel of non-animal stablised hyaluronic acid for injection into the skin to correct facial lines, wrinkles and folds, for lip enhancement and for shaping the facial contours. Because it is a non-animal product no testing is required prior to use. This is one of the safest fillers and has been in prescribable use since its introduction from Sweden in 1996. It has full FDA approval for injection of wrinkles since 2003

Emervel is a new non-animal stablised hyaluronic acid from French company Galderma and was launched in April 2011.There is a complete range of 9 dermal fillers in the Emervel range. Volume is specifically formulated to lift, sculpt and volumise the cheekbone area. This area often loses volume and flattens with the ageing process and the natural feminine contour of the upper face is diminished leading to heavier nose to mouth lines.

Stylage is a non-animal stablised hyaluronic acid from Vivacy, It is claimed to be the first Hyaluronic Acid filler cross linked with Mannitol, an antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables that fights the negative effects of free radicals . It claims to reduce the risk of bruises and swelling. Duration is said to be 6-12 months.

Sculptra (New Fill)

New-Fill poly-L-lactic acid is a collagen stimulator which works from deep within to stimulate new collagen to smooth and firm areas of the face and restore the skins natural elasticity. This compound, although recently used in cosmetic medecine has been used in plastic and reconstructive medecine in Europe for more than 20 years. Clinical trials have shown the effects of New-Fill can last for 1 to 2 years. It is undergoing FDA approval.

Radiesse is a suspension of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) particles in glycerin and saline. Once injected just below the dermis, the glycerin carrier is absorbed, and a fibrous layer is deposited around the CaHA particles, stabilizing the implants and adding further bulk. The clinical effect of Radiesse is estimated to be between 2 and 4 years. Radiesse is currently approved by the FDA in the U.S. for vocal fold augmentation.

Bio-Alcamid is a prosthetic implant of composed of 97% water and a synthetic polymer. It is designed to fill bigger areas like scars, lips, deep wrinkles and sunken cheeks. Think of this Italian product as a permanent replacement for fat tissues. If you have a reaction, the company claims that it is possible to incise the skin and take the compound out. There is evidence that a physician can also dissolve the implant with an injection of H202 (hydrogen peroxide) but we are unaware of any proceduralist that does this on a regular basis. It is less popular now due to some clinics having complications with the product.
