Dr. Patrick Treacy

UCD Lecture

Dr. Patrick Treacy gave this lecture by invitation to the Medical Faculty of University College Dublin (UCD) of in the fall of 2017. It follows the story of his best-selling memoir 'Behind The Mask' about a boy from a small Irish village who became an adventurer, a humanitarian and a doctor to the stars. The lecturer grew up in rural Northern Ireland during the Troubles and witnessed many horrific scenes there during his early university years in Queens University, Belfast. Eventually after confronting danger, he switched career to study medicine in Dublin. He remained determined to become a doctor, when Margaret Thatcher curtailed his grant to attend a second university. He raised the money for medical school by copying the actions of German students by smuggling cars from Germany to Turkey. While working in ER in a Dublin hospital, a needle he had used to draw blood from a patient with HIV accidently jabbed him in the leg. in the days before treatment, he got a colleague to remove part of his leg where the needle-stick occurred. He took blood test after blood test, wondering whether he was going to die. Overwhelmed, he moved to New Zealand, away from everyone who knew what he was going through: his friends and his colleagues. Thus he began a peripatetic existence, working as a doctor around the world until he received the all-clear. In Saddam Hussein's Baghdad, he was arrested and imprisoned, spending days wondering whether he was going to be hanged as a spy. In Africa, he documented the plague of HIV. In the United States he worked as a ship's surgeon. In Australia, he worked for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. On eventually returning to Dublin, he set up the award-winning Ailesbury Clinic, where he researched in the cutting-edge of the emerging field of cosmetic dermatology, championing treatments including new uses for Botox and the use of stem cells and growth factors in hair transplantation and facial rejuvenation. These novel treatments brought him multiple research awards but also many stars to his doorstep, including the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. The lecture includes many images and videos of his past life in the form of a living photograph
