Mole screening

Mole screening is a proper examination of the moles on your skin by a doctor, not a look in the mirror.

Anything removed is examined by a skin histopathologist.

How does it work

Moles are usually harmless collections of pigmented cells. Most white-skinned Irish people have between twenty and fifty. New ones can appear up to the age of thirty or forty, though most appear by twenty, and some fade with age.

A few types carry a higher than average risk. Moles larger than about six millimetres with irregular shape and uneven borders are called atypical or dysplastic naevi and tend to run in families. Large moles present from birth also carry increased risk, particularly those bigger than an adult palm.

At screening the doctor examines your moles and, if any look suspicious, discusses a treatment plan with you. Anything removed is sent to a dedicated skin histopathologist at St Vincent's University Hospital for examination. That cost is covered by VHI, Laya and Aviva Health if you have medical insurance.
