Anti-wrinkle injections

The injections themselves usually take around 10 to 15 minutes. Your overall appointment may be longer to allow time for consultation, assessment and treatment planning.

Most people experience only brief discomfort during treatment. A very fine needle is used and each injection takes only a few seconds.

Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising can occur at the injection sites.

The effect develops gradually rather than immediately. Some people begin to notice a change within the first few days, with the effect continuing to develop over approximately one to two weeks.

Individual responses vary.

For many patients, the effects last approximately three to four months, although this varies between individuals and according to the area treated, dose and product used.

You do not necessarily have to wait until the effects have completely disappeared before discussing further treatment. Your clinician will assess your muscle activity and advise when repeat treatment is appropriate. Treatment should not be repeated more frequently than recommended for the medicine and indication being treated.

Anti-wrinkle injections temporarily reduce the muscle activity responsible for dynamic lines, lines that appear or become more noticeable when you make facial expressions.

Reducing repeated muscle movement may help these lines appear less pronounced while treatment is active. However, anti-wrinkle injections do not stop the natural ageing process or prevent every type of wrinkle.

Lines caused by factors such as sun damage, changes in skin elasticity and loss of facial volume may require a different treatment approach.

As with any medical treatment, side effects can occur.

Common temporary effects can include redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising or headache. Depending on the area treated, less common effects can include temporary facial asymmetry, eyebrow or eyelid drooping, or weakness of nearby muscles.

Serious reactions are uncommon, but allergic reactions and effects associated with the spread of botulinum toxin beyond the injection area have been reported.

Routine allergy testing is not normally required before treatment. Instead, your clinician will take a medical history, including any allergies, previous reactions, medications and relevant medical conditions, to determine whether treatment is suitable for you.
